The Story You Need Tomorrow Is Happening Now

One of the most common conversations I have with clients begins with a familiar concern: “We don’t have a story for this appeal.” The problem usually isn’t a lack of stories. It’s that no one began collecting them until the deadline was approaching.

The truth is, your next great fundraising story is probably unfolding right now. Somewhere in your ministry, a guest is taking an important step forward, a volunteer is quietly making a difference, or a staff member is witnessing a moment that perfectly reflects your mission. These stories happen every day, yet many are forgotten because no one takes the time to preserve them.

Stories remain one of the most valuable resources a nonprofit possesses. Statistics demonstrate impact and financial reports build confidence, but stories help donors understand why your work matters. They transform numbers into people, services into hope, and generosity into changed lives.

Summer provides the freedom to slow down and listen. Begin by asking who has experienced meaningful change, what moments have inspired your staff, and which stories best illustrate your mission. Build stronger relationships with program staff so meaningful moments are regularly shared with your development team.

Capture everyday ministry through photographs and short videos. Organize interviews, model releases, and images so they can be easily found later. A well-maintained story library becomes an invaluable resource for appeals, newsletters, social media, grant proposals, and presentations.

When fundraising season arrives, organizations that have invested in authentic storytelling aren’t scrambling for content. They already possess a library of real experiences that demonstrate the impact of their mission. Every nonprofit has remarkable stories to tell. The difference is that some organizations begin collecting them long before they need them.
